Cedar Point Delays Major Announcement Due To Coaster Accident
Cedar Point executives indefinitely delayed a major announcement planned for Tuesday, potentially unveiling a new ride for next year.
The decision, made on Friday came just one day after the Raptor roller coaster struck and killed James Young. (story here) The 9 p.m. Tuesday announcement was not only scheduled to be historic and record-breaking, but was expected to involve the addition of a new roller coaster opening in 2016. A statement from park spokesman Bryan Edwards, emailed to media this afternoon, said,
“Due to yesterday’s incident, we are respectfully postponing our 2016 announcement event.“
He said he didn’t know when the announcement would take place. later in the day Cedar Point tweeted the following statement from their official account:
“Due to (Thursday’s) incident, we are respectfully postponing our 2016 announcement event,” according to a tweet from Cedar Point’s official Twitter handle. “Thank you for your patience and understanding.“
Digital renderings reportedly leaked from a cellphone app have circulated on social media this week, showcasing what many fans believe could be the layout of a new Cedar Point dive coaster. The rumored new coaster is said to include a logo featuring a regal bird and the name “Valravn,” which Cedar Point trademarked this past year. A Cedar Point app that allegedly released images of Valravn has since been disabled from the Google Play store. Construction has been on going the entire summer clearing a sizable amount of land near the Cedar Point Marina. This apparently is to make room for the park’s 2016 attraction. The moves include demolishing the Good Time Theater, removal of the Turnpike Cars, and relocating both Calypso and Dodgem.
With all that said, the accident is believed to be the fault of the guest. Now the park has decided not to make their big announcement. Although it was a sad and tragic accident, their are a lot of people who do follow the rules and look forward to these big announcements. Guests plan their vacations and days off when Cedar Point holds special events at the park such as new project announcements. The park should really take all of that into consideration (which they may have) before canceling. Coaster fans have been posting via social media that they feel like they don’t matter…
