Disney World’s First Drone Show To Debut For The Holidays At Disney Springs
“Wishing upon a star” will take on an even more magical meaning in the skies of Disney Springs this holiday season. Just days after receiving permission from the FAA to fly drones, Walt Disney World has announced Disney Springs will soon have an incredible new light show utilizing drones to celebrate the holidays!
Earlier today, Disney revealed the first look at the new show, with a quick peek video at a Christmas tree made of green lights in the night sky.
This comes just under a year since we first mentioned drones coming to Disney.
Last year, Intel put on a record breaking light show in Germany using 500 drones. The autonomous drones, which are essentially an LED light with propellers attached, darted around the sky, spelling out “500” and “Intel.” This is some of the same advanced technology that will be utilized by Disney for their new show at Disney Springs. If you haven’t seen the record breaking intel video, watch it now! It’ll blow your mind!
Intel’s drones flew autonomously, only requiring a handful of people to operate the huge light show. When Intel demonstrated the 500 drones in Germany, only three or four people were monitoring the drones.
Putting the drones at Disney Springs instead of in a theme park is a smart way of getting people out and introducing them to Disney Springs, especially to locals who may end up doing some Christmas shopping there. We assume once everyone sees and likes the free show at Disney Springs, it will most likely be moved and incorporated into larger shows inside the parks.
in September, Disney also filed a drone-related patent that would incorporate special effects with what was referred to as “flixels” or flying pixels. Included in the application was this excerpt that explains how Disney planned on utilizing them:
“Flixels are to accompany entertainment at the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts, including during each resort’s nightly Fireworks Spectaculars. Deployed from a monitored platform designated as the launch/land area in restricted access areas of each resort, Flixels will be “magically” incorporated into Disney story elements that engage and inspire children and their families. Once the show segment concludes, Flixels will return to the launching / landing area“.
This new light show at Disney Springs will be a great fit with the new Holiday spectacular announced for Hollywood Studios.
Disney had no further details, including when the show would debut. Keep checking here for an official start date, as well as future announcements. For tickets and more information, visit the official Walt Disney World website by clicking here.
