Hersheypark Adding 23 Acre Expansion
As we reported back in February, Hersheypark is looking towards a massive 2020 project. Earlier today, Hershey Entertainment and Resorts presented a land development plan at the Derry Township Planning Commission meeting for redeveloping 23 acres on the west side of the 121 acre park.
The plan calls for redesigning the park’s front entrance gate and drop-off and pick-up areas, creating access roads, demolishing existing buildings and infrastructure, constructing several buildings, making plaza improvements, installing stormwater collection and management facilities, building a new bridge, and a full restoration of Spring Creek. Some of the work was noted in prior submissions to the county.
This proposal comes after a complete re-route of a 5000+ foot stretch of Park Boulevard. The alteration removed the section of road that ran alongside the park, acting as a barrier between the park and the former Parkview Golf Course, which Hershey Entertainment owns. The expansion will take over a portion of the golf course property. The golf course, built by Milton Hershey in 1927, closed in 2005.
However, one important part of the expansion was not discussed, any potential rides, attractions, or buildings that would be added.
“We really look forward to sharing those exciting plans at a future date after the approval process,” said Garrett Gallia, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts spokesman, after the meeting.
The improvements are expected to start in 2019. About 23.5 acres will be disrupted for the project, including more than three acres in a floodway.
Hersheypark totals about 121 acres, including the 11-acre ZooAmerica. For the 2018 season, Hersheypark added two new water rides, Whitecap Racer and Breakers Edge to the Boardwalk section of the park.
