More Changes Coming To Cedar Point For 2019
A live taste of the Old West is coming to Cedar Point this summer! In addition to Forbidden Frontier on Adventure Island, an interactive and immersive storytelling experience, guests of Cedar Point will have more to explore for the 2019 season. The park is introducing new ways to dine and a summertime street celebration in Frontier Town!
The festival is part of a strategy, announced this year by new Cedar Fair LP Chief Executive Officer Richard Zimmerman, to create more event-oriented activities at Cedar Fair’s 11 amusement parks in order to maximize season-pass sales and give park-goers more reasons for repeat visits.
Cedar Fair’s research indicates millennials crave “experiences over possessions” and will pay for premium events that include specialty foods and premium beverages. So with that comes a new 2019 lineup!
Hugo’s Italian Kitchen
A taste of Italy is coming to America’s Roller Coast. Hugo’s Italian Kitchen will serve traditional Italian fare like hand-made pastas, fresh pizzas baked in a large open-flamed brick oven, chicken parmesan sandwiches, salads, meatball sandwiches and fresh desserts. Hugo’s Italian Kitchen will be located in the former Midway Market location, adjacent to the Raptor roller coaster. The concept art looks interesting, especially with the moped scooter parked out front!
Below is a look at the current construction.
Check out the new sign! Since there’s not a big new coaster this year, we’re now excited about signs!
BackBeatQue
Live music and savory smokehouse barbecue come together at BackBeatQue. This new rock ‘n’ roll and Motown-inspired eatery will serve smoked brisket, rotisserie chicken, pork platters and fresh perch. Southern sides like okra, cornbread muffins and house-made mac & cheese will also be available.
Since all of the seating for BackBeatQue will be outside, the outdoor dining space will give guests a great place to eat, relax, and take in the sights and sounds of the BackBeat Quartet and Cedar Point’s Gemini Midway. The new restaurant will be located between the Monster ride and Magnum XL-200 roller coaster. You can nearly smell the BBQ just looking at the concept art!
Inside, guests will find a music and Motown-inspired vibe with some classic rock ‘n’ roll decor! Check out the drum set chandelier!
Construction is already well under way!
Frontier Festival
Frontier Town, already home to the “Best New Ride of 2018,” Steel Vengeance, turns up the WILD factor this summer replacing the Brew and BBQ with the NEW “Frontier Festival “– an immersive Old West, sunflower-inspired street festival with local artisans, kids’ crafts and games, continuous live entertainment and wild food and drink to sample and savor.
Various activities will be available, including:
- Flower Patch – an opportunity for kids to choose their own flower and decorate their own flowerpot;
- Junkyard Jamboree – guests can make their own music on antique metal items
- Balloon Stampede – kids can stomp on balloons to win prizes
Guests can also enjoy live music from Cedar Point’s Bluegrass Jamboree and other local bands on the Gossip Gulch Stage. Plus, guests can tap their boots during line and square dancing lessons at the Hubbub Hoedown and meet the Frontier Townsfolk for special photo opportunities.
Frontier Festival also features specialty food items made right on the midway, like two-meat barbeque baked beans, bison chili, pulled pork sliders, fire roasted chicken drums, smoked wings, toasted sunflower vinegar slaw, smoked brisket, wild strawberry shortcake, peaches & cream and more. Guests can wash the wild food down with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage samples, including craft brews, ciders, wines and handcrafted lemonades.
Frontier Festival runs daily June 7th – 30th from 4 – 10 p.m. There is a nominal event fee for food & beverage tasting cards.
Forbidden Frontier on Adventure Island
The park’s new signature attraction, an immersive, themed entertainment experience, will open Saturday, May 25. The park already revealed the first part of the new attraction (seen here). More information on Forbidden Frontier on Adventure Island will be released in the coming weeks right here on Coaster Nation, including story detail, artist renderings of attractions and more!
For guests staying at a Cedar Point resort property in 2019, they now have the option to purchase a special “Wild Card Package” that includes Unlimited Cedar Point admission May 11 through June 30, 2019. More on that package here.
The Cedar Creek Mine Train will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Guests will notice some updaed theming elements around the ride.
Midway through 2018, Cedar Point put a policy in place on Steel Vengeance that banned any loose articles from the queue line – including cell phones. Guests were froced to use lockers or have a non-rider hold their belongings. The park quickly realized they couldn’t control the no phone policy – therefore, ride pouches will be installed on the trains for 2019!
The pouches will be similar to the ones below, seen on Twisted Timbers at Cedar Point’s sister park Kings Dominion.
When Steel Vengeance opened for the 2018 season, there was only one backpack style strap to hold onto that was located to the outside of each rider. Later in 2018, two little pole style handles were added for each rider to old onto – giving riders a handle for each hand. The pole style middle handles were so close together between the two riders that people were constantly bumping knuckles. Pole handles shown below.
For 2019, the pole style handles have been removed. Back to the single original backpack strap! But lets face it, everyone’s hands should be up anyways!
Here’s a sneak peek at some of the new merch for 2019.
2020 marks Cedar Point’s 150th anniversary, which some speculate will deliver something big. Cedar Point pr reps haven’t released much details about the multi-year celebration, but they have mentioned guests can expect a retro atmosphere that pays tribute to the park’s lengthy history. That retro atmosphere is kicking off this year starting with a retro paint scheme on the Corkscrew!
