World’s First Mixed Reality Experience On A Virtual Reality Coaster Coming To Six Flags
Last year, Six Flags teamed up with Samsung Electronics America and brought us North America’s first Virtual Reality Roller Coasters. 10 different rides at 10 different Six Flags parks received a VR experience — either the Superman experience or the New Revolution experience using Samsung Gear VR powered by Oculus . This year, the companies have paired up again, but this time, they’re bringing us a one-of-a-kind mixed reality experience. This new experience features complex gameplay where riders actually make key decisions during the ride that can affect their scoring at the end. The fully immersive game thrusts guests into a space battle to save the planet from an impending alien drone invasion.
Starting this season, riders will be able to enjoy The New Revolution Galactic Attack at Six Flags Magic Mountain (near L.A.) and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (near San Francisco). Brett Petit, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Six Flags said:
“This mixed reality technology is truly groundbreaking and like nothing our guests have ever experienced. Six Flags and Samsung changed the game last year with VR on twelve roller coasters and now we are breaking new ground yet again.”
When riders board the coaster, they will don their Samsung Gear VR headsets. They will also be introduced to the device’s pass-through camera functionality, which instantly makes riders aware of their surroundings by allowing them to see the “real world”. They’ll be able to see the real world at the same time as the virtual content! Basically it’s what we currently call “augmented reality”. At this point, a heads up display overlay on the pass-through camera view will show data like the current status of weaponry, time codes, fuel cells, and a countdown clock. Once the train crests the lift hill, a massive, swirling wormhole comes into view. As the train drops down the first hill, the mixed reality view switches to a completely immersive VR view. Riders will find themselves in a fighter spaceship cockpit. At the bottom of the first hill, riders are launched into the middle of a space battle, coming under attack from flying drones firing lasers and missiles. After swinging through some tight turns and close calls in this space battle, riders will be brought into one of three drone bays. Each bay offers a completely different gaming experience with a different ending.
At Six Flags Magic Mountain, guests will experience Galactic Attack on The New Revolution, the world’s first looping coaster build in 1976 and North America’s first VR coaster in 2016. At Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, the experience will be on Kong, the park’s floorless looping coaster.
How and when can you try out this experience? The official opening weekend at Six Flags Magic Mountain is February 25-26 and February 20 at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. BUT, if you bring a full bag of non-perishable food items to support local regional food banks to either park on February 18-20, you’ll be given an exclusive opportunity to check out the VR ride experience before it opens to the public!
