Kings Island Teases 2020 Attraction
It’s that time of the year when amusement parks around the world start to announce and tease their plans for next big attraction. Some parks choose to announce projects via simple press releases to the media, while others like to host announcement events. But, before those events take place, there’s usually lots of speculation from fans, teasers from the parks, and sometimes even planned leaks.
With the recent work done at Kings Island, many park enthusiasts were expecting a long promotional tease as seen with prior star attractions such as Banshee and Mystic Timbers. Within the last week, many of these enthusiasts’ hopeful wishes have been answered.
Kings Island has recently been adding informational posters to the construction wall surrounding the former Firehawk site. The posters consist of a picture of a ride, brief descriptions, and a hidden letter. Many fans have speculated that the arrangement of hidden letters would create a phrase for their 2020 coaster – which is being referred to as Project X.
The first 7 posters displayed the letters T, E, O, T, W, K, I. It was quite easy to deduce the phrase to be TEOTWAWKI, which stands for “The End Of The World As We Know It”. The phrase is somewhat ironic in context as the world of Dinosaurs Alive met its end for the 2020 addition.
Take a look at the first 7 posters up close in the video below:

In the past, parks have been known to decide their next teasers off of what fans decipher. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if more is added to the info wall or even posted to Kings Island’s socials over the next few weeks leading up to the official announcement. So, until then, queue the R.E.M track!
UPDATE – THE TAPE
Interestingly, through-out the process of adding posters, the park has been randomly covering up and changing the small letters and numbers on each poster. Some posters have totally been re-printed and swapped out, while others were changed by covering with some sort of “tape” or sticker. Folks are calling it tape, but it’s more like a vinyl covering to match the posters backgrounds perfectly. We believe this wasn’t a mistake as it seems more of a planned spin on things.
UPDATE 7/28/19 – 9 POSTERS HAVE BEEN DISPLAYED!
Just as we suspected, TEOTWAWKI is the phrase after 9 posters were displayed officially making it “The End Of The World As We Know It”. With all the Sci-Fi / Space themed posters in play, it looks like we’re headed to the stars. Now, we wait for the next hint that should reveal the ride name itself. There’s been many speculations that the new attraction will be called Orion or Polaris with the recent trademark listings from Cedar Fair, and the names both fit this theme. We are still unsure if the abbreviated letters mean anything or if they are just a red herring. Maybe it’s just a good way to tie in some extra items for gift shop revenue. Surely super fans would purchase these as metal signs or even rolled posters.
We are unsure of the tape meaning, but TEOTWAWKI was almost too easy. If you unscramble the letters, they also spell out “wow take it”.We’re waiting on something else to pop up, or a major twist at the official announcement.
UPDATE 7/29/19 – What’s Lurking in The Woods?
In the latest “readers mailbag” KI blog post, Don Helbig (Park Rep) posted the following reply to a fan question asking “What’s lurking in the woods around where Firehawk stood?”
UPDATE 7/30/19 – HASHTAG TO PETITION
And now for the little twist we expected.. The park has added yet another poster, this time in the form of a hashtag. Upon closer inspection, the hashtag includes QR codes within. After scanning the code, a change.org page created by the park opens asking fans to sign a petition to learn what is behind the fence. Watch the video below to see exactly how this works.
Once guests are on the website, they will be asked to sign the petition as seen in the image below.
An interesting comment was added to the petition page that we believe is a park plant with clues. It seems to be a play on a relative in the plot of the Flight of Fear story line.
UPDATE 7/31/19 – DON ASKS FOR MORE TAPE
It seems Don Helbig (Kings Island’s pr guy) is looking for the best deals on more gaff tape.. In order to make fans look closer at the new letters / numbers on the posters, Don dropped a nonchalant tweet asking where he could find the best deals on more gaff tape.
We have to admit, this was fun for a week, but it’s now getting a bit prolonged. Folks are starting to loose interest with so much to follow. So now we wait again….
UPDATE 8/06/19 -KINGS ISLAND TO REVEAL PROJECT X DETAILS
An update has been posted by “Concerned Citizen” on the page of the petition posted last week. The post states that Kings Island will reveal the secret information on August 15th. The status update reads:
